The move from Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United is causing the team to rethink completely.

While Ronaldo has scored a ton of goals, United have not played well and are only one point away from their last three league games.

The big dilemma for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is putting a team together, and that doesn’t necessarily involve the biggest names.

Gary Neville told Sky Sports: “Manchester United are currently unbalanced.”

How did we get here?

The opening game of the season showed that Pogba and Fernandes are at their best.

Fernandes scored a hat trick, Pogba set up two of the goals, the Frenchman added two more assists.

Granted, that was against an open team from Leeds, but it showed what these players are capable of together with a mobile striker like Mason Greenwood leading the line.

Ronaldo is more static and United has to adjust to that. The Portuguese superstar is going nowhere.

So United are trying to fit players around them and together Fernandes and Pogba have not been able to convince since Ronaldo’s arrival.

Links with two options

United needs to strike the right balance and that means sacrificing one of the two.

The most likely option for United is for midfield duo Fred and Scott McTominay to be recalled. With Marcus Rashford on the left, the choice between Pogba and Fernandes in attack remains easy behind Ronaldo.

While Pogba can play there, Solskjaer rarely does. Fred, McTominay and Fernandes make up the midfield trio.

The second option is for United Pogba to play in midfield with Fred or McTominay. Let’s say Fred for the sake of the argument.

In this scenario, United will have to play against Jesse Lingard rather than Fernandes as his rate of work will benefit the midfield and Ronaldo.

Option A) Fred, McTominay, Fernandes or Option B) Fred, Pogba, Lingard.

Then add Marcus Rashford on the left, Mason Greenwood on the right, Ronaldo in the front, and United is seeded.

Jadon Sancho looks like a luxury at this point until he hits the level United requested and will definitely be rotating with Rashford, with United likely looking to use the returning attacker more cautiously after his operation.

It would be naive to play both Pogba and Fernandes against Atalanta.

United have to make a choice and find out which team offers the greater balance in the style of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
