With Sergio Romero planning his likely exit due to an expiring contract, another Romero could join.

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United should at least be interested in defender Cristian Romero.

Romero is said to be of interest to United, costing a £ 34m fee if the club decides to push his signature forward.

So who is Romero and why do United care? Here’s a look at what you need to know …

1) Romero is on loan from Amad’s former club Atalanta, which is committed to buying him from Juventus for £ 21.5m. They would be content to resell it this summer for a profit of £ 34 million, Sky claims.

2) 23-year-old Romero is from Argentina and has not yet been capped at senior level by his country despite having youth caps.

3) Juventus signed Romero from Genoa in 2019, they also signed Matthijs De Ligt in his position that same summer and he has never played for the club. He was loaned to Genoa and loaned to Atalanta that season.

4) He has played regularly this season and has played a total of 29 Serie A games. Romero put Atalanta in second place and Juventus in fifth place.

5) Romero likes a booking. This season he has collected 10 yellow cards, the third highest in Serie A.

How good is he

Romero is number one in Serie A in terms of interceptions per game at 3.1.

Whoscored.com reports that he is in the top 10 tackles per game at 2.2.

He is the number one defender in Serie A for dogfights won by 4.3 per game.

He played for Atalanta in a 2-0 win over Benevento last night and completed 93 percent of his passes as his team remained clean and won 2-0.

With those numbers, it’s easy to see why United cares, and at 23, his prime is ahead of him.

Romero is happy with his move to Atalanta. He told Football Italia: “I’ve always said that Gasperini is a great coach who helps me grow so much. It was the best choice to come here and join Atalanta. I knew a lot of players who loved this place and I listen to all of his advice. “

Is a move likely?

Adding a center-back is seen as possible but is no longer the number one priority this summer after Eric Bailly extended his contract.

It is widely believed that the most important transfer on the agenda is to add winger Jadon Sancho and then use the leftover money to strengthen the rest of the squad.

This means United likely won’t be spending £ 60-80m on a Raphael Varane or Jules Kounde, and a player in the £ 30-35m price bracket like Romero is more likely.

It is possible that Axel Tuanzebe could pursue a loan or permanent future outside the club to play regularly and Romero would give United the depth they need in the center-back.

This is interesting to watch but before anything can happen his permanent move from Juventus to Atalanta has to be triggered. From then on, United can negotiate with them again.
