Manchester United’s long-term leadership position may be unclear, but the club are always on the lookout for the best talent.

So it should come as no surprise that United are associated with players despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking and the short-term nature of Ralf Rangnick’s expected tenure.

ESPN report United is following the progress of Ronald Araujo, who plays for Barcelona.

Who is Ronald Araujo?

He is a 22-year-old center-back from Uruguay who has made 13 appearances for Barcelona this season.

It’s been a tough season for Barca, who now have Xavi at the helm, but Araujo was one of the better players.

The big issue for Barcelona is the Araujo Treaty. His current contract expires in 2023.

And ESPN reports that the financial troubles at Nou Camp will prevent them from offering the defender the terms they desire.

How much could it cost?

Araujo has a £ 171m release clause on his contract. However, with its expiring deal, Barcelona would be forced to accept far less.

Their money problems also mean that they are unable to charge high fees when selling players.

All offers must be considered. If United make a speculative offer, Barcelona would have to weigh it seriously, as much as they would be reluctant to do so.

Is anyone else interested?

Araujo has been linked to Everton during the summer transfer window and their Merseyside rivals Liverpool are also featured on the ESPN report.

Sources said Liverpool are particularly interested in Araujo and have been watching him all year round.

The talented midfielder Ilaix Moriba refused to sign a new Barcelona contract in the summer and moved to RB Leipzig.

The Catalan giants don’t want the same thing to happen to Araujo, but his contractual situation could force them to sell.

United could have to fight for his signature against their bitter rivals if Rangnick decides he is a target worth pursuing.
