Manchester United have taken the move their supporters have been advocating for a decade. Cristiano Ronaldo returns to the club.

United confirmed an agreement to sign Ronaldo in no time after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed interest in a move at his press conference.

Whisper it, the transfer window isn’t finished either. Ronaldo may not be the only new signing to join United before Tuesday night.

There are two more signings United could make and yes there will likely be departures too, but let’s focus on who could join for now …

Kieran Trippier looks possible

Before the Ronaldo News whirlwind hit, there were developments in Kieran Trippier’s move to United for the first time in a month.

Sky Sports reported Dortmund’s interest in Diogo Dalot, who would not be needed if Trippier signed, while Mundo Deportivo reported that Atletico Madrid were moving forward to sign Lille right-back Zeki Celik.

Trippier News followed, and The Athletic reported that United had rekindled interest in the England international.

Assuming United has the money, and it may need to be offset by spending, expect this deal to close.

Trippier is an excellent flank striker and Ronaldo could really benefit from the Atletico defender joining the club with his header skills.

New signing in midfield?

This is more of a question mark, admittedly, but expect United to try to “do something”.

An ideal situation would be for United to distribute the money to Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, a Portuguese team-mate of Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

Money spent on Ronaldo and possibly Trippier can lead United to make a more modest investment.

That could end up being Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez who is available.

The Times reports that Saul is available for a loan transfer and United has been in contact.

With Scott McTominay sustaining an injury, United’s midfield options or lack of them were highlighted.

Saul is a high profile player who would bring leadership and quality to a suddenly crammed team. There is very little risk of moving on a loan deal and it is possible he could follow Trippier as a late addition to Old Trafford.
