Manchester United avoided the unthinkable by signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester City tried hard to sign him, SkySports reported before United spectacularly hijacked the move.

It came just in time. Manchester City had overtaken itself, as evidenced by the cocky tweets from two of their former players.

Went too early

One of them was former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong, who hoped his old club would turn out well.

De Jong urged City to announce the deal after behind the scenes talks with United were well underway.

De Jong admitted he was wrong and United announced the deal. The Dutchman said he would “take the L”.

Oops! I wonder what Fergie said to Ronaldo on the phone …

Well that escalated quickly! 👀

Tried to take the shine off @ rioferdy5 but he knew better! This is known as the “Fergie” effect.

Take this L and keep going! 😂

When it’s done it will be nice to see Ronaldo back in the Premier League! # Transfer window

If this makes De Jong feel any better, he wasn’t the only one as former City defender Joleon Lescott put his foot in the game.

Lescott tried to mock Rio Ferdinand when it looked like Ronaldo was City-bound.

He volunteered for Ferdinand’s video podcast as soon as City closed the deal.

Unfortunately, he may not be as open and ready to discuss Ronaldo’s move to United as he was when City led the race.

The city was firmly put in its place by this. There are things your money just can’t buy and one of them is Cristiano Ronaldo.
