According to Sun, Bruno Fernandes could be in doubt for Manchester United’s next Premier League game.

The Portuguese star is said to have faced a slight blow after United’s exploits in the Champions League. But the prospect of seeing the man who appears to have been bought to cover him is virtually non-existent.

At first glance, signing Donny van de Beek for £ 40m (BBC) seemed like a feat.

The midfielder had impressed at Ajax, scoring 41 goals and providing 34 assists for the Dutch giant. And he was the ideal replacement, having relied excessively on Fernandes in the previous campaign.

But Van de Beek hardly has a look inside. Since arriving at Old Trafford in 2019, the 24-year-old has only made five league starts.

This season he has only played six minutes in the league and played three times across all competitions. So what is the chance that Van de Beek will start if Fernandes is out this weekend?

In truth, practically none.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could cause a surprise and start Van de Beek. Lots of United fans would love to see it.

But since he’s barely gotten a kick all season, the chances of him suddenly starting a huge game against Liverpool are slim.

Instead, United would likely play Paul Pogba or Jesse Lingard in the role of Fernandes. That is how far down Van de Beek’s pecking order is right now.

Will his big chance ever come?

Solskjaer has always praised Van de Beek. However, saying that he hopes the Dutchman gets a chance is not the same as saying that he will.

This call is for the United boss alone. And it seems like one he doesn’t want to take.

If United were in better shape and the game was played against less skilled opponents, the Dutchman might start. But it will be very surprising when he does.

Of course, all of this could be irrelevant once Fernandes recovers. But the fact that his apparent backup isn’t even that should be alarming to a player too good to be ignored all season.
