Anthony Martial had a disappointing 2020-21 season at Manchester United. There is no other way to dress it up.

Martial only scored seven goals, a huge drop from the 23 he scored a year earlier. He added a little sparkle to that by adding five templates.

United are hoping Martial can regain his form this season and there is a glimmer of hope.

The data shows that Martial averaged more shots on goal per 90 in Premier League games than any other Manchester United player in the 2020-21 season.

FBRef.com numbers show that Martial averaged 1.28 shots per 90 at the target.

This was ahead of Bruno Fernandes (1.16), Mason Greenwood (1.14), Marcus Rashford (1.11) and Edinson Cavani (0.98).

This shows us that Martial was effective at connecting with his teammates and getting into goalscoring positions.

His recklessness in front of the gate just let him down. Martial averaged 0.09 goals per shot, compared to Edinson Cavani 0.29.

Martial has to work hard on that. He used to have a reputation for being clinical outside the gate. When he first came to United from Monaco it seemed like he would never miss him.

This clinical streak left him especially in the last season. He missed an easy chance to win the game against PSG and an easy one on one away at Fulham was typical of his season.

Martial is a confident player and he started last season badly. This seemed to add to his fear. It’s possible he put too much pressure on himself to continue his 23-goal 2019-20 season and fared even worse when he realized how far behind he was.

Strong preparation for the season can help Martial, as can the arrival of Jadon Sancho. Martial performed well last season, such as away at Sheffield United and away at Manchester City, but they were few.

Martial will be frustrated after missing the season end and the European Championship, but he needs to clear his head and come back strong.

When he played up the left side in contrast to his often listless starts last season, Martial had moments when he got part of his job right before his shooting let him down. In the next season he has to bring everything together.
