Manchester United played a friendly against Burnley at Old Trafford today.

United lost a scheduled preseason game against another Lancashire club, Preston, last month because of positive Covid tests.

In addition, many players haven’t had too much preparation for the season.

While it’s an unusual move, it’s clear and understandable why United organized this game.

Test win at Manchester United

The end result was 3-1 for United at Old Trafford. Burnley opened the scoring through Aaron Lennon, who trains with the Clarets.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard scored United’s first two goals before Fred was back on the top scorer list.

Jadon Sancho started the game after making his United debut from the bench against Leeds on Saturday but Raphael Varane was not involved.

According to MEN, was the United starting XI: Heaton, Dalot, Bailly, Maguire, Williams; Matic, Van de Beek; Sancho, Mata, Lingard; Warlike.

According to Burnley’s website, her team consisted of: Hennessey (Norris 46); Bardsley, Collins, Thomas, Pieters; Lennon, Helm, Gomez-Mancini (Tucker 77), Glennon (Dodgson 60); Barnes, Vydra (Harker 55).

On the bench sat: Lindelof, Jones, Pogba, Greenwood, Fred, Fernandes, James, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Hannibal, Kovar.

Goal scorers Fred and Victor Lindelof were substituted on at half time, 30 minutes before the end of the game all other substitutes came on except substitute goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

That means Phil Jones made his first appearance in a red shirt since January 2020.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about Jones on the club website last week and said: “I am impressed with his resilience in training. We have to deal with the workload early on.

“I was a part of it myself, having been outside for most of a year and a little longer.

“He was so determined and worked so hard. Now is not the time to rush things; Now is the time to really make the final piece perfect. As I said, reserve games, U23, maybe behind closed doors.

“He’s already had in-house games against the 23ers so it’s looking good.”

It seems that United’s plan to get Jones fitter is working and tonight’s game is another step forward and hopefully his body is responding well to it.

Maybe he’ll be fit enough to be on loan before the time window expires because he has to play football regularly and he won’t get that at United, especially with Raphael Varane here now.
