Manchester United will make new signings this summer. We hope. It is still at the beginning and although the talks have so far been unsuccessful, there will be additions at some point.
One of the first questions fans have when a new addition comes in is which roster number the new addition will take.
Juan Mata’s decision about his future will have a huge impact on that.
Mata’s contract expires at the end of June. The Spanish newspaper Sport reported that United had offered him a one-year extension with a reduced salary. He should weigh it up.
Mata is currently wearing the Manchester United number eight shirt. If he goes, this won’t be empty for long.

Available squad numbers for new signings
One of the dilemmas United are facing is that potential new signing Jadon Sancho seemed ideal for the number 7 shirt.
Edinson Cavani is currently wearing this and it seems rude to ask him to give it up.
Cavani could perhaps be persuaded to move to 9 but this is carried by Anthony Martial. So this would depend on the French to leave and there are no reliable sources to suggest that this is on the agenda right now.
Mata’s departure, if it happens, could make the number 8 shirt a good alternative for Sancho.
Bruno Fernandes might also be tempted or encouraged by his close pal Mata to take the number 8 of 18 jersey if it were available.
When signing up, substitute goalkeeper Tom Heaton could take one of the following squad numbers.
Last worn by Chris Smalling
Last worn by Marcos Rojo
Last worn by Sergio Romero
Last worn by Timothy Fosu-Mensah
Last worn by Odion Ighalo
Other numbers that may become available
Like Juan Mata, various players have question marks about their futures because they have either been loaned out or are likely to leave.
Those are the extra numbers that could be up for grabs this summer.
Currently David de Gea. assigned
Currently assigned to Phil Jones
Currently Juan Mata. assigned
Currently assigned to Lee Grant
Currently Jesse Lingard. assigned
Currently assigned to Andreas Pereira
Currently Diogo Dalot. assigned
It is possible that David de Gea will be sold or loaned this summer. We don’t know which direction United will head in. If he left, Dean Henderson would take the number one jersey and give up his 26.
Phil Jones’ number 4 jersey seems ideal for a new center-back. Getting him out of the books is just as difficult as bringing in a new face.

Like Mata, Lee Grant is considering extending his contract. Lingard and Pereira will likely leave, as will Dalot.
You can add number 18 to the list above if Fernandes goes and takes Mata’s eighth shirt. But he could be happy at 18, according to Paul Scholes.
There was an important change last year when Mason Greenwood switched to the number 11 jersey.
Young talents like Anthony Elanga – who wore 56 – and Hannibal – who wore 46 could achieve “better” numbers if they join the first team squad next season and are not loaned out.
