Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move from Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

ESPN reported last week that United were on the verge of a deal, although there has been no positive further progress on the matter.

The French international has endless experience after 10 years at Real and is still 28 years old. He still plays impressively at a very high level.

We took a look at his 2020/21 season and career honors. It is clear that United would sign a very strong player with qualities that benefit the team on and off the pitch.

The 2020/21 season

Strong in the air

Varane ranked in the top 10 in La Liga because he won the highest percentage of his aerial duels: 75.3 percent.

This compares with Harry Maguire (77.5%), Victor Lindelof (65.7%), Eric Bailly (61.4%) and Axel Tuanzebe (46.2%).

Varane is effective at fending off enemy attacks and led Real Madrid to successful evictions. He made a total of 146, and no other Real Real player made three-digit numbers.

This underscores the effectiveness of Harry Maguire, the English ace with 176. Victor Lindelof made 132 spaces.

Goes into the last third

Varane made 103 passes into the last third of the pitch last season, the fifth-highest in Real Madrid’s squad, ahead of Marcelo and Lucas Vasquez.

He is far behind the productive Harry Maguire (194), but only slightly above Victor Lindelof (99).

In possession

Varane finished second on Real’s roster for progressive carries in possession with 4,406 yards. This ranked only behind Luka Modric.

He was still far behind Harry Maguire (6,498) and even Victor Lindelof (5,041). But from his team leadership role in this field for Real it is clear that Varane is able to deliver what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer demands of his center-backs.

Varane scored two goals in Real Madrid’s win over Huesca in February. This was his first brace in a game since 2014.

Varane’s career

It can take a while to unwind a list of Raphael Varane’s honors. But it speaks volumes for his ability.

At the international level, his most famous triumph was the 2018 World Cup victory.

At club level, Varane has won La Liga three times and the Copa del Rey once.

It is noteworthy that he has won the Champions League four times and the UEFA Super Cup three times.

In 2018, he became one of four players in history to win the Champions League and World Cup that same year.
