Manchester United should use Euro 2020 to look into potential signings and an available player set out his case on Sunday.

Athletic’s Radar Euros Guide reported last week that Marcel Sabitzer could be available this summer for just € 15m at RB Leipzig – £ 13m.

This discount is due to Sabitzer’s contract expiring in 2022. Clubs across Europe should be keen on the midfielder and his performance for Austria against North Macedonia at Euro 2020 on Sunday showed why.

Lead and United should be aware of it

Sabitzer helped Austria to a 3-1 victory in an entertaining game against North Macedonia.

He helped run midfield, touching the ball 83 times and completing 91 percent of his passes.

Sabitzer also had three chances, more than any other player on the field. He provided the template for Stefan Lainer’s opening goal.

The Austrian international also won three tackles and one interception, contributing to both sides of the ball.

Next up is the Netherlands and then the Ukraine and Austria is well positioned early to make it to the second round.

Quality, value, experience and leadership

Sabitzer is a central midfielder who can play a variety of roles and has worked for Leipzig this season.

He is a box-to-box player who, if necessary, can play a defensive midfield role in seven appearances for Leipzig last season.

He scored nine goals for Leipzig and provided four assists in all competitions.

Leipzig is in a state of upheaval after Julian Nagelsmann’s move to FC Bayern Munich and this could be the right time for club captain Sabitzer to continue.

Sabitzer, 27, is not so much the defensive midfielder United are looking for, but should be viewed as an upgrade and replacement for Fred.

A midfield of Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer would be more dangerous than the status quo, but also very clever defensively.

At just £ 13 million, Sabitzer would be a deal almost too good to pass up.

Sabitzer was one of the top 10 players in the Bundesliga for passes into the penalty area last season. Jadon Sancho is in first place.

According to FBRef.com, he is also one of the top 10 “progressive passers-by” in the Bundesliga.

With money being diverted towards a deal for Jadon Sancho as well as potentially a right-back and center-back, the chances are that midfield could be overlooked.

Therefore, a cheap offer for Sabitzer would be a smart way to strengthen itself. Sometimes you have to be opportunistic in the transfer market. But if United leaves too late, he’ll be taken over by another sane club.
