Manchester United were still in second place after a disappointing 1-1 draw with relegated Fulham.

United fans were welcomed back to Old Trafford for the first time in 14 months but failed to give fans the result they wanted.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will test players for the Europa League final against Villareal next Wednesday and many of them have shown why they should be on the plane to Gdansk.

Here was our pick of the top three players in today’s game …

Edinson Cavani

With a goal worthy of any man’s game performance, Edinson Cavani showed why the club extended the 34-year-old’s contract in June 2022.

He led the line brilliantly today, pushing high against Fulham’s defense and winning the ball in dangerous areas.

And then came the goal – a goal most players would never think of.

After a flick-on or dummy from Bruno Fernandes, Cavani was past the goal, but instead of carrying the ball closer to the goal, he hit it for the first time from a distance of about 40 meters and lifted it over the goalkeeper with the secret annexe.

There is a big chance he will face Villareal in the Europa League final and feel after today’s game that he deserves it.

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes was at the heart of every United attack tonight, with his most direct influence being seen on Cavani’s goal.

Unfortunate enough not to score, he sent a couple of bats towards the Fulham gate.

Fernandes took responsibility for free kicks and pushed the team forward. He was worthy of the captain’s armband.

Another outstanding performance from the Portuguese midfielder will be crucial for United in next week’s final.

David De Gea

The Spaniard had little to do throughout the game but when called out he was excellent.

Especially in the 60th minute when he scored a fantastic brace from close range.

De Gea should be pleased with his performance despite a goal he couldn’t do anything about.

It may have been De Gea’s last game at Old Trafford but he saw it with the quality and reflexes that United fans have come to love him for.
