Manchester United reported that the interest in Kingsley Coman over the weekend was the most predictable story of the summer.

German outlet Sport1 reported that Coman will be a priority target for United this summer if the Sancho deal fails.

Coman has had an impressive season scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists. He can play both corners and is a proven winner. He has titles in France, Italy and Germany and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final in 2020.

The problem is, we’ve heard it all before. That story has likely kept coming up this summer, and it’s pretty telling that it comes up after United’s first offer for Sancho was made and rejected [BBC].

The illusion of an alternative

United moves all-in for Sancho. Don’t buy the Coman rumors for a moment.

But as for United’s negotiators, they will want to create an illusion of an alternative to warn Dortmund that the club could look elsewhere.

Coman is obviously a very good player who would be a good fit for United. Sport1 reports that it could be available for 50 million euros (43 million pounds).

This is due to his Bayern contract, which will expire in 2023. That is the other factor that comes into play here.

The Bundesliga champions want to extend their contract and that will likely happen. The interest reported by United will also benefit Coman’s warehouse in the negotiations.

United was linked with Coman in the summer of 2020. ESPN reported that the winger was an alternative to Jadon Sancho at the time. And in the end, United did nothing.

You will not respond to interest in Coman this time either. Sancho is the top target and the interest in the Bayern winger is just a ploy to put Dortmund under pressure.

A tick in negotiations

It always makes sense to have alternatives. But we now know that United have no real alternatives to Sancho for our third summer.

This is just one more story to check off the ‘Sancho Transfer Tracking’ bingo card.

There is often a “Plan B” linked. It was the same when United chased Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the name of Max Aarons made the rounds.

Last summer, Sergio Reguilon was linked as a left-back when United’s top target was Alex Telles.

Coman’s name fits United and doesn’t harm the player either.

But in the end, United will switch to Sancho rather than Coman this summer. Talking about the Bayern winger is just speculation, unless something really goes wrong.
