Nathan Bishop could have a bright future at Manchester United. But the next few years will be decisive for its development.
Like another young goalkeeper before him, Bishop needs a nice loan period or two. From then on, the sky could be the limit.
Dean Henderson’s two-year loan with Sheffield United made him thrive. He returned to Old Trafford with the bite between his struck teeth. And he now seems to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first election stopper.
Before that came three loan periods. But Henderson’s patience and hard work paid off and Bishop should take note.
The 21-year-old has to keep going. And the next season offers the ideal opportunity.
He has previous first-team football experience and made 39 appearances for Southend prior to joining United. And he will definitely try that again.

Bishop benched twice during United’s march to the Europa League final. He was also in the squad for the day for a Premier League game. But he has to rise now.
A loan move to Mansfield Town is ideal. The move was confirmed last week (BBC) and now the United youngster can prepare for the regular start.
United signed Bishop following his good appearances in the first team in the first division. So its quality is not in question. He now has to show in the fourth division week after week.
Bishop’s chance beckons
It’s not easy to break through at United. It’s even harder when you’re a ‘keeper’. But there might be a way for Bishop.
If he’s doing well on loan over the next few years, he could return as Henderson’s deputy.
By then, David de Gea should have disappeared long ago. And if he realizes his full potential, Henderson could be one of the best in Europe.
But every big club needs two top stoppers and Bishop should be fully focused on the future.
United will want to see what he can do in the second division next season. When he looks at how the club’s new number one has gone, that should be the only inspiration he needs.
