When you think of Manchester United v Roma at Old Trafford, one game comes to mind.
United’s 7-1 win in 2007 was inspired by Michael Carrick and Alan Smith, with Cristiano Ronaldo torturing the Roma defense.
So the Roma were understandably not very happy at all to be drawn against United in the 2008 Champions League quarter-finals.
That draw is best remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo’s header at the Stadio Olimpico after a pass from Paul Scholes.

What happened at Old Trafford in 2008?
United won the game 1-0 and secured a 3-0 aggregate victory in a game that was nowhere near as memorable as the previous home game.
Carlos Tevez scored the goal, a header from a cross from Owen Hargreaves.
Roma had a chance to make the goalless draw interesting when they received a penalty, only Daniele de Rossi shot the penalty over the bar.
Sir Alex Ferguson had made some controversial calls for the game. He left Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes on the bench.
United’s starting line-up was: Van der Sar; Brown, Ferdinand, Pique, Silvestre; Hargreaves, Park, Carrick, Anderson; Tevez, Giggs.
Hopefully this evening Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not follow this path of calm of the key players. This is a game that United will have to give everything to win and take a healthy advantage for the second leg.

The rest is history …
United’s 2008 win over Roma resulted in a semi-final against Barcelona.
After a draw at Nou Camp despite a Ronaldo penalty shoot-out, Paul Scholes scored the goal at Old Trafford to send United into the final.
United then faced Chelsea in the final, where Ronaldo scored the goal that triggered a penalty shoot-out.
A miss by John Terry and a shot by Edwin van der Sar in front of Nicolas Anelka ensured United played in the Champions League for the third time.
Hopefully it’s another good omen for United to face Roma as this 2021 version of the Red Devils looks to win another European cup.
