Manchester United have a new international in their ranks. Hannibal Mejbri chose Tunisia this summer and has already played three international matches.

That could bode well for his hopes for a first-team breakthrough next season.

The 18-year-old is one of United’s brightest jewels. And it’s only a matter of time before he shows it off at Old Trafford.

Now he has tasted international football, that could do it – for the club and the country.

Mejbri will not want to return to the U23s next season after playing three senior international matches in just 10 days this summer.

It will have given him a tantalizing glimpse into what is to come. And it could be the catalyst to make sure he’s ready for United sooner than initially thought.

Mejbri is quickly growing out of second division football. The fact that he was not only called up by Tunisia, but is also celebrated as a huge coup, testifies to his ability.

Two substitute bets and then a 70 minute bet in three rapid-fire test matches show that he is not there to level the numbers.

And he’ll return to United this summer with a jump in his crotch and a goal in mind.

Time for the next step

Switching a loan may be the most likely option. But Mejbri is a generation talent and United would be smart to keep him around.

He may not get many chances next season, but each one will be an important stepping stone to bigger things.

There’s a reason United signed the youngster for £ 8.5m (men) before playing senior football for a minute. And it will be interesting to see how he plays in preparation, now he can add “international” to his CV.

If he was confident beforehand, Mejbri’s exploits will only increase significantly in the past few weeks.
