Quietly and effectively, Dillon Hoogewerf has grown into one of Manchester United’s most exciting young players.

The 18-year-old may not have created the inches of Hannibal Mejbri, Amad Diallo or Charlie McNeill, but he’s just as promising.

This season Hoogewerf has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 19 U18 games. His all-round play and creative eye helped McNeill score many of his 24 goals at this level.

At first glance, Hoogewerf and United superstar Bruno Fernandes have little in common. However, the latter could be the ideal teacher for a young Dutchman looking to break through at Old Trafford.

Hoogewerf is a driving, dynamic attacker who often makes a big impression. However, his versatility is so great that he can also act as a highly effective attacking midfielder.

The teenager likes to drop low and work behind a center-forward through and through. Just like Fernandes with Edinson Cavani, Hoogewerf develops a good understanding with McNeill.

The position of the teenager has yet to be defined. Although he was billed as a striker when he joined the club, he is often selected on the wing but falls back into the central areas to orchestrate attacks.

As good as he is at a duel, he also has a good range of passes and often attacks from midfield and comes into the penalty area late to end the moves.

His eye for a delicate passport is impressive even for such a young man. He can often split up a defense instantly, as Fernandes regularly does for United’s senior team.

It is this creative side that connects him most closely with Fernandes.

A star in the making

Given the number of broad players already playing in United’s ranks, Hoogewerf’s future could well be central. In the next few years, learning from Fernandes could accelerate that opportunity.

If you also factor in his ability to score, the similarities are interesting to note.

The former Ajax youth product lives from founding others. But he can also take risks that get in his way. And not just in the box.

Like Fernandes, Hoogewerf is not afraid to shoot from a distance and he has achieved real success at U18 level with it.

A promotion to the U23 is another step in the right direction. From there it would be of great help to learn from United’s £ 67m (BBC) through occasional first-team training and Fernandes is the perfect role model.
