Manchester United want to sign Cody Gakpo as new manager Erik ten Hag waits for an arrival in the forward areas.

Anthony Martial impressed during pre-season but will miss the opening game of the Premier League campaign with Brighton through injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo has said he wants to leave the club but as it stands, he is still a United player and could face Brighton.

United have still not signed a new forward through the transfer window so far, but the Mirror say Ten Hag wants his countryman Gakpo.

United want Gakpo

They say that the asking price Ten Hag’s former club Ajax have set for Antony has forced United to turn their attention to Gakpo.

The report says that Gakpo would cost around £40 million, which is about half of what Ajax wanted for Antony this summer.

PSV will only listen to offers once their Champions League fate has been sealed and they face a third-round play-off home clash against Monaco on Tuesday night after drawing the first leg 1-1.

PSV are managed by United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Gakpo has said that he has been mentored by the former Red Devils forward.

“Van Nistelrooy was my striker trainer in the academy,” he said.

“I have learned a lot from him and I look up to him. He’s spoken to me about how to finish in certain situations and it helped me a lot.

“He told me some tricks on shooting and keeping my options open. Shoot low and hard, not beautiful and high. A goal is a goal, you know. I’m grateful he did.”
