The Manchester United U18s came close to winning the title last season and finished second in the league.

United are hoping to get even better this season but big changes are expected. Many of last season’s squad, including top scorers Charlie McNeill and Dillon Hoogewerf, will be promoted to the U23.

Players like Zidane Iqbal, Charlie Savage, Noam Emeran, Bjorn Hardley and Alvaro Fernandez will also regularly play football under 23.

So there is a group of players who are promoted to the U16 and form the new U18 squad.

United kicks off the season on Saturday at lunchtime in City, a game that comes first against the second of last season. A week later, the team will meet Liverpool and then Leeds. It’s a great start to the season against the club’s three historic rivals.

The tough start to the season and a bloated U23 squad, which will be downsized with players on loan before the transfer deadline, could mean that a few temporarily go back to the 18s. The squad should take shape from September.

Alejandro Garnacho

Garnacho was United’s third top scorer for the U18s last season and the team is looking for him to step up as a lead man this season.

The former Atletico Madrid talent is now in his second season in England and should benefit from being settled in better and knowing what to expect.

Garnacho has had a strong preparation for the season and will try to continue this in competitive games. Do not rule out a promotion to the U23 this season.

Daniel Gore

Young midfielder Daniel Gore is rated very highly and will start to make a name for himself this season.

Gore made his U18 debut last season and scored in the FA Youth Cup.

Former boy scout and youth coach Lee Waddington told MEN earlier this year that Gore is the smartest player he has coached in 30 years and gave him a tip for a “massive future”.

Ethan Ennis

Striker Ethan Ennis joined United from Liverpool this summer and will be keeping an eye on the U18’s second game of the season.

Ennis, 16, can play front or outside and will be an asset for the coming season.

Last season he scored a hat trick in the FA Youth Cup after getting off the bench, which showed his potential.

Kobbie Mainoo

United have high hopes and confidence in young winger Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo made his debut under the age of 18 last October at the age of 15 and made a total of eleven appearances.

This season, United are hoping Mainoo can have more leverage in terms of goals and assists, and he should enjoy the added responsibility and feeling of being at that level.

Manni Norkett

16-year-old striker Manni Norkett is hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year’s top scorer Charlie McNeill.

Norkett is moving up from the U16 and has been in the United Academy since joining in 2018.

Norkett is a goalscorer and will be looking to make a name for himself in the coming season.

Marc Jurado

Marc Jurado has already made his U23 debut but is expected to start this season with the U18.

Jurado has been named team captain and can benefit from a leadership role in the group.

The former Barcelona talent is only 17 and will be looking to build on a solid first season at the United academy.
