Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo. The Telegraph report the Red Devils are keen on the forward, who is represented by the same agency as manager Erik ten Hag.

Essentially, Gakpo is Manchester United’s alternative to Antony, a priority transfer target who has been priced out of the club’s reach.

The Times reported a move for Antony would set United back around £70 million. There were even claims Ajax could increase this demand. It was time to step away.

There is a good argument Cody Gakpo is a better player at a substantially cheaper cost.

Gakpo better than Antony

Manchester United would be signing a player nearly twice as prolific at half the cost. The Telegraph report there is a £35 million asking price.

Gakpo made a huge impact last season for PSV, scoring the goal which secured the KNVB Cup final against Ajax. Antony missed the game through injury.

  • CODY GAKPO 21/22: 21 goals, 15 assists
  • ANTONY 21/22: 12 goals, 10 assists

Gakpo’s 36 goals and assists in all competitions eclipses Antony’s 22, and at a cheaper price, there is a lot to like about this deal.

The advantage of Antony was two-fold. He has played in Erik ten Hag’s system before, and is a more natural fit for the right-wing.

Gakpo’s versatility is where he holds the advantage over the Brazilian – in addition to his cost and overall goal and assist output.

He can play on either wing and can even play up front as a striker or even a number 10. This means he won’t purely be a back-up for Cristiano Ronaldo or Anthony Martial, but could displace Marcus Rashford on the left in a front three and feature alongside a centre-forward, while filling in, in case of an emergency.

He is only 23, an ideal age, ready to take the next step in his career. He has started this season well, scoring in the Dutch Super Cup, and then netting two goals in PSV’s Eredivisie opener while playing only 60 minutes.

ESPN report Gakpo is interested in a move to United. This is a move the club should be pushing for right away and try to push over the line before deadline – perhaps even offering Amad on loan to sweeten the deal.

With PSV now reaching the final stages of the Champions League qualifiers with a win over Monaco, a deal may have been complicated. This is extra reason for United to consider sending a player on loan as part of the package.
