Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United’s talisman, wants to be active again in Saturday’s Premier League duel against Aston Villa.

The 36-year-old missed Monday night’s FA Cup third-round win against Steven Gerrard due to a minor muscle problem but is hoping to train normally before the trip to the Midlands today.

United’s number seven has appeared in every Premier League game since making his emotional return to the club from Juventus in the summer.

When asked about his chances of performing at Villa Park, Ronaldo told MUTV: “I hope so. We’ll try on Thursday. I will try to train normally. Let’s see how the body reacts.

“Cross your fingers. I’m confident.”

With 14 goals so far this season, United’s top scorer will be eager to get back into action and get the Reds back on the road to winning in the Premier League.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has called on his teammates to “stay together” with the club amid a challenging time and has also supported interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

After Ronaldo captained the team for the first time when he returned to the club in the loss to Wolves, he is desperate to come back on the pitch and help his team.

Ronaldo added: “I know my body. One hundred percent. I have grown up and my experience gives you the opportunity to understand your mind, your body and everything related to football.

“That’s good. I’m a different person, a different player [to my younger self] but the ambition is still the same.

“I want to play and help the team.”
