Manchester United will use an unwelcome Roma attack against Alex Telles.

Di Marzio reports that Jose Mourinhos would like to sign Roma Telles over an injury to Leandro Spinazzola.

Telles’ first season at United was disappointing, and it wasn’t really his fault. He ended up replacing Luke Shaw after the Englishman improved his form and injury-free season.

Roma reportedly want to sign Telles on loan, which would be a stupid deal for United. In the event United let him go, it would only be acceptable to actually get a fee for him.

United paid £ 15.4million in postage last summer. Telles has so much more to show than he could show and simply deserves a number of games.

It would be understandable if he were careful not to get this at United. Shaw was outstanding and his Euro 2020 form underscores the extent of his job.

But switching to Roma wouldn’t necessarily be better. Spinazzola joined the tournament’s UEFA Euro 2020 team ahead of Shaw and will return in the second half of the season.

United’s reasoning for signing Telles hasn’t changed. Cover is required for Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams is on loan, The Athletic reports.

Shaw’s injury record was generally poor. In the 2019/20 season, he started just 20 of 38 Premier League games.

Last season was more of an exception and Telles will likely play a bigger role in 2021/22 than last season.

The Brazilian could even start the season as Shaw returned from his international appearance late. His presence allows United to bring the English ace back into play after a long season.

Telle’s lack of football last season resulted in him missing from the Brazilian Copa America squad. So you can understand his concern about Shaw’s form, and while he doesn’t want to give up at United, there isn’t much time until the 2022 World Cup.

United fans haven’t seen the best of him. But because of Shaw, we don’t know if we’ll ever do that. It’s a good problem, of course.

Kieran Trippier moving is only an acceptable alternative

There is a way United could sell Telles and his presence wouldn’t be felt as strongly. Notice that we say “sell”. A loan would simply be pointless.

A move to sign Kieran Trippier could be a double solution on the left and right back.

Trippier showed at Euro 2020 that he can play on both flanks and could take cover both Luke Shaw on the left and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right.

United are keen on Trippier but have been put off by Atletico Madrid’s ridiculous £ 43m price tag. If this can be reduced or even compensated for by leaving Telles, then a move could work.

However, in an ideal world, United would have both. Wan-Bissaka and Trippier on the right and Shaw and Telles on the left. This would mean some serious squad depth and leave the squad armed for any injuries.

But as we saw last season, despite the high number of matches, there may not be enough minutes to keep everyone happy. If Telles wants to stay, United should make sure he does. But when he goes on his way, things get a little trickier.
