Manchester United’s move to sign Antony became the most expensive transfer of the summer taking all add-ons into account.

BBC Sport report the deal could end up costing a total of £85.6 million, a staggering fee which felt many feeling that the Red Devils had overpaid.

United may have contributed to this rising fee for not pushing harder for Antony at the start of the transfer window, although there are no guarantees Ajax would have sold to United for a cheaper fee.

An earlier deal struck by Real Madrid for one of the world’s elite young players, suggests this is simply the price of doing business for top clubs.

United and Real both agree £85m transfers

Real Madrid agreed a deal at the start of the transfer window for their top transfer target, Aurelien Tchouameni.

BBC Sport report the total fee with add-ons agreed with Monaco for Tchouameni will reach £85.3 million.

Antony and Tchouameni are both 22, and are regarded as two of the best young players in the world in their respective positions.

Both players had been regarded at being valued more around the £40 million mark at the start of 2022.

What both Manchester United and Real Madrid showed, is that ‘if you love the player enough, you will pay what it takes to get them’.

Neither United or Real set out intending to pay close to £80 million, and yet, they were each so convinced the players were truly elite, that they were worth paying for.

United may have taken some flak from some quarters for signing Casemiro, the player Tchouameni has ending up replacing, with Real looking forward and United playing catch-up.

But let’s face it, Real are far above United’s level right now, currently the reigning Champions League winners, a tournament the Red Devils could not even qualify for last season. Casemiro will be an excellent addition and upgrade in midfield, a move United had to make.

Big talent costs big money

The move for Antony shows United are prepared to pay big for top young talent too, like Real did with Tchouameni.

Tchouameni had his heart set on Real and would not consider United. We should be grateful Antony was genuinely desperate to make the move to Old Trafford, going on strike at Ajax to force it through.

There are always bargain deals to be struck, United have shown some rare prudence this summer with a £13 million move for Tyrell Malacia and a free agent acquisition of Christian Eriksen.

Others are simply more costly, and clubs like United and Real get charged a premium because selling clubs know they can demand it, and know when they have a special player.

Of the two players, it is likely Tchouameni who will have the smoothest transition, joining a top level side who are reigning Champions League winners.

Antony has joined a club which is a work in progress, but as he showed with goal on his debut, he won’t let the pressure and scrutiny phase him.
