Manchester United have now made their first bid of the summer for Ajax’s central defender Lisandro Martinez.
The Daily Mail claim that United have matched Arsenal’s offer for the 24-year-old central defender, but could boost their bid with add-ons.
The Manchester Evening News say that United have tabled £37 million for the Argentine, as they have now made their move for Lisandro.
It seems United are happy to let other competing clubs set a rough ballpark figure for the players they want to sign this summer.

So it seems they are happy to let Arsenal scope out the kind of offer Ajax might be inclined to accept before deciding whether to match it.
And it seems they are happy to proceed at just under £40 million, although it remains to be seen whether Ajax will accept that.
Erik ten Hag’s time as Ajax boss does not seem to have given United any kind of advantage – or at least a steer – on what Ajax might accept.
But perhaps the Dutch champions are already putting out enough by United taking their manager, without making it easy for them to swipe some of their top talent too.

Martinez’s idol is former United defender Gabriel Heinze, and he has earned a nickname of the ‘Butcher’ for his uncompromising style.
That is exactly what United need but he also has a reputation for being ‘cultured’ in possession and is capable of playing in midfield.
That blend is clearly what is impressing United and they will hope to win this particular battle with Arsenal, with a number of deals now seemingly progressing.
