Manchester United are among the top European teams taking an interest in Argentine striker Facundo Farias, report AS.

Farias, 19, is an attacking midfielder who plays for Argentine side Colon. He scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 64 appearances.

AS’ report claims Manchester United’s interest is more advanced than any other English club, while Jose Mourinho’s Roma are also keen.

The report also claims PSG have been alerted by a tip-off from Lionel Messi’s father Jorge, who has recommended the player as a potential signing.

Your Club’s SURPRISE Star This Season

Who is Facundo Farias?

Farias has had to overcome adversity in his life so far. AS Argentina report he lost his mother to cancer when he was just 10, and his father died during the pandemic two years ago.

Last week he scored his first ever Copa Libertadores goal, an impressive volley to give his side the lead in a 2-1 win over Paraguayan side Club Cerro Porteno.

Farias can play in several attacking roles. In 16 games for his club this season he has featured as a number 10, a central striker, and on both the left and right wing.

AS Argentina reported that Farias, ‘participates a lot in the game with the ball sewn to his foot and is an artist.’

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has compared Farias in style to Philippe Coutinho, citing pace, vision, and first touch among his strengths.

Farias has been part of Argentina’s under-20 squad although he has not yet been capped by the senior side.

Is this a move United will pursue?

United don’t make a habit of signing players from South America, recently passing on buying Julian Alvarez in January, who went to City, who seemed like more of a sure bet. But this was more to do with a blanket ban on signing anybody mid-season.

United bought Facundo Pellistri in 2020 from Uruguayan side Penarol, a deal helped along by a connection with his former manager Diego Forlan. This was the first deal from the continent since buying Guillermo Varela from the same club in 2013.

New manager Erik ten Hag may be more open to moves of this type, with the move to sign Antony from Brazilian side Sao Paulo in 2018 one of his most successful deals for Ajax.

Farias would not cost a lot, probably a fee of around £10 million. This would make him a very interesting low-cost gamble for the club.

It could actually be more costly not to move, as United discovered at the weekend when former target Moises Caicedo led Brighton to a win.

Farias looks like he is going to become a star, he is already making an impact at a top level in South America, but he is going to be a developmental prospect. United would be smart to invest.

Dan is still wondering what would have happened if United had kept Juan Veron…
