Manchester United have joined the race for talented Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, ESPN reports.

The first reaction here is to wonder where it belongs. With the squad as it is now, it’s very simple, it doesn’t.

But the key is that Aouar is reportedly being monitored as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba.

Strong competition

While United only sees Aouar as a replacement option, other clubs can win the race by simply giving it more priority.

PSG, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are all supposed to be interested. Lyon are now ready to make money for financial reasons and Aouar only has a two-year contract left.

ESPN report Aouar could be available for as little as 25 million euros (£ 21.3 million). A bidding war could raise that price.

What can Aouar United offer?

Aouar, 23, is a player who has his prime still ahead of him. He plays as an attacking central midfielder and like Pogba occasionally on the left for Lyon last season.

In 33 home games last season, Aouar scored eight goals and provided three assists.

Last season data from FBRef.com shows that Aouar finished fifth in Ligue 1 for “shot creation actions” in the 2020/21 season with an average of 5.1 per 90 minutes. This ranked just behind Neymar, Angel Di Maria and Memphis Depay.

He would be another strong creative mind to be thrown into United midfield that ESPN is reporting to be in right now.
