Paul Scholes called on Manchester United’s player recruitment this week as he criticized the club’s aging strikers.

Scholes told BT Sport he thought it was ridiculous that United’s top strikers were 34 and 36 years old.

Edinson Cavani will leave at the end of the season when his contract expires and United will have to look for alternatives.

Cristiano Ronaldo could get restless at United should the club fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

So it makes a lot of sense for United to be watching Dusan Vlahovic, The Mail reports.

Vlahovic the best Haaland alternative

While Erling Haaland is Europe’s most wanted young striker, Dusan Vlahovic is a strong number two.

Vlahovic is enjoying a great season for Fiorentina with 12 goals in 14 games.

Vlahovic scored 21 goals for Fiorentina last season and his Serbian side recently stunned Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in World Cup qualifiers.

Vlahovic is valued at £ 70m, reports The Mail, a fair price for a top young striker who could become one of the stars of the World Cup next year.

The Fiorentina is unlikely to wait until after the tournament to make money due to Vlahovic’s contract that expires in 2023.

Juventus are interested while Tottenham and Arsenal have also been linked to The Mail, while The Mirror links Manchester City with a move.

Connections with United were inevitable at some point, but given Cavani’s deal expiring, a move makes sense for a striker. The report claims United was watching him.

Whether or not the decision to spend £ 70million on a striker makes sense is another question considering the money needs to be reinvested in the team’s midfield.

The point is that Ronaldo is only a short term fix, even if he stays, and Vlahovic is a tempting option.

Strong in the air and quick with his feet, the Serb was recently praised by his international team-mate Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Milinkovic-Savic told FIFA: “Good? He’s not good, he’s excellent. I’m pretty sure the statistics would confirm that, given his age. However, I think he’s the type of player who still gets upset when he doesn’t play well so he’ll definitely get better and the world is talking about him.

“In both training and games, he never takes it lightly when he misses a chance, so he’s hungry to score and win. I like the way he tries to prove himself, so I think he’ll be one of the big ones. “

The chance to play alongside Ronaldo and learn from Ronaldo could be marketed as a reason for signing Vlahovic rather than a reason against it. But it will only make sense if United fixes other areas of the team first.

The final decision rests with the manager, whoever it is. So all transfer rumors should be taken with a firm pinch of salt, considering that the uncertainty in United’s coaching bench could currently continue into next summer.
