Manchester United has asked former Lyon coach Rudi Garcia for the position of interim manager.
National said Darren Fletcher spoke to Garcia ahead of Villarreal’s 2-0 win last night.
Garcia left Lyon at the end of last season and has been without a club since then. United reportedly also interviewed former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde for the role.
In an interview with Athletic in October 2020, Garcia said he was friends with the Manchester City boss and outlined his football philosophy. The report says he admires the Spaniard.

He said of Guardiola: “We are friends. He’s done well everywhere, but I’m not just an influence. I like to read about coaches, what they think and feel.
“When I read a good idea, I try to put it in my sauce – my ingredients. But you can’t just copy in this job. You must have the courage to have your own beliefs.
“I like it when my teams have the ball. Playing short passes, being collective. The defense is stable, I let my strikers be as creative as they want. You have freedom.
“I’m closer to a Spanish philosophy, but England was the home of football. Maybe I’ll go to Italy or England again in the future. I had an opportunity to go to Everton and Southampton a long time ago. “

Garcia has also coached clubs like Lille, Marseille and Roma in his career so far.
These are good pedigree teams with passionate, expectant fans, but it’s fair to say that the United job would be on a different level than any of his previous work.
What about pochettino?
United on Sunday announced their intention to hire an interim manager before agreeing on long-term employment over the summer.
It was reported that Mauricio Pochettino would now move from Paris Saint-Germain but the Argentine downplayed them on Tuesday.
With Pochettino available now, United should take this opportunity instead of taking a transition period and then making another move in the summer.
But it seems they are pushing the interim plan – or at least implementing it in case Pochettino can’t be won – after interviewing at least two candidates, Garcia and Valverde.
