Manchester United have now used four different central midfield combinations in their first two games and Donny van de Beek has had no kick.
Fred and Scott McTominay versus Leeds. Against Southampton we saw Fred and Nemanja Matic start the game.
Then it was Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic before the game ended with Jesse Lingard and McTominay. Paul Pogba has since started both games together with Bruno Fernandes.
Van de Beek was again an idle substitute against Southampton, the only senior United midfielder to have not played this season.
And while Lingard was given credit for chasing a goal, the fact that Van de Beek had no touchpoints in the first two games shows that he’s further down the pecking order than anyone would wish.

United fans and Van de Beek hoped this season would turn out differently. The Dutchman returned to pre-season earlier than Pogba, Fred and Fernandes and was even named captain late in a pre-season friendly match.
One day before the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke positively about Van de Beek’s improved physical condition.
Van de Beek started United’s final pre-season friendly, a 4-0 win over Everton, and it looked likely he could start the opener.
While it was a bit of a surprise to go with Fred and McTominay, it was understandable and the result justified it.
A change was always possible against Southampton and we expected Van de Beek to replace Nemanja Matic.
Matic couldn’t justify his place, and the most disappointing thing about both games was not only that Van de Beek didn’t start but wasn’t taken off the bench either.
At this stage, Van de Beek will be frustrated, even if he doesn’t show it externally. No footballer is happy when he is not playing.
United next travels to Wolves, a stadium where Van de Beek played an important role at the end of last season.
Solskjaer should consider him for this game, even if it means moving to another midfield partnership only three games in the season.
United spent £ 35million on Van de Beek last summer and with the club currently reluctant to sign another midfielder the club must give the Dutchman a decent chance.
Van de Beek appeared to have cracked it in United’s final pre-season game ahead of the season. Now he seems to be back in first place. Next weekend could give him the chance he’s been waiting for. Let’s hope he can take it when he gets it.
United fans frustrated
Here’s a look at some of the comments made by United fans on social media about Donny van de Beek …
Donny Van de Beek has absolutely no future at United if he can’t kick Fred and Matic and even a not-very-fit McTominay came before him. Game over.

I need someone to explain the van de Beek situation to me. Slow.

What does Van de Beek have to do, man?
I’m just sick of him not playing, we need to get control of the game and VDB is a great option for that.
The man is used too little 🙁

Van De Beek reminds me of a great pair of shoes that you buy..store them in the closet to ruin them and never make you wear them. Wear those damn shoes Ole. Please. Once only. If they feel uncomfortable, just post them on Ebay and let your shoes move on.
