It took Manchester United eleven years to finally find a worthy successor to Cristiano Ronaldo, who wears the number 7 shirt.

In 2020, Edinson Cavani picked it up and succeeded where a number of pretenders failed.

Cavani ended the season with 17 goals and had managed to captivate the fans with his performances in a special way.

It had long been assumed that Jadon Sancho would wear the 7-shirt when he arrived. But he paid his respects to the senior Cavani, who had earned the right to keep it.

And then Ronaldo came back. The Portuguese legend wore the 7-shirt before Ronaldo and is a five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Its entire off-field brand is based on its CR7 iconography.

United announced last night that Cavani had agreed to hand over the number 7 jersey to Ronaldo. He will wear the now vacant number 21.

Respect for Cavani

Cavani didn’t have to give up his shirt. He’s a senior player who earned the right to wear the number.

Phil Jones didn’t give up the number 4 jersey for Raphael Varane from a far, far weaker negotiating position.

Cavani’s contract expires in a year anyway, and he could have said to Ronaldo, wait another year.

But Cavani doesn’t like that. He pays attention to the club’s history and the players who came before him and recognizes the connection Ronaldo has with the support and the shirt.

This decision by Cavani is a great gesture and shows that he is happy to have Ronaldo by his side at the club. It will work wonders for their relationship on the pitch.

As is well known, Ronaldo helped an injured Cavani off the pitch at the 2018 World Cup, both wearing the shirt numbers they wear today. This was Cavani’s thank you.

Cavani was already a fan favorite and this only made the Uruguayan even more supportive of the club …

Many mediocre jerseys have worn the number 7 jersey since Ronaldo left, only Cavani was worth it. It was definitely a big gesture for him to give it back to Ronaldo.

Edison Cavani joined Manchester United, scored some stunning goals, broke the curse of the number 7 jersey and returned it to its rightful owner with no complaints. Reluctant folklore status is loaded like another Uruguayan I remember. 😬
