Manchester United’s roster for the Europa League final was announced on Monday evening.

United had to leave Anthony Martial at home after failing to recover in time from a knee injury he sustained in March.

This left United a unique roster of five strikers to play against Villarreal as they didn’t cost a single penny in transfer fees between them.

The five forwards on United’s roster are Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Elanga and Shola Shoretire.

Four academics and one free transfer

Edinson Cavani signed a free transfer for United earlier this season and has become a huge fan favorite.

Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have graduated from United Academy, and both Elanga and Shoretire are emerging as potential stars of the future.

Rashford has scored 21 goals this season and Greenwood 12. Cavani has scored 16 goals while Elanga has scored once.

That’s a total of 50 goals between the players. While United’s list of strikers didn’t cost anything, they are nonetheless a threat to the defense.

Investment still required

The forward line has yet to be invested. Elanga and Shoretire are among the 26 in the tour group but may not be able to make up the 23-man squad for the match with Villarreal.

The academy’s success is really something the club can be proud of. Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford saved United millions in the transfer market.

However, the forward positions still require investment. Greenwood’s rise gave United an excuse not to reinvest Romelu Lukaku’s money in a striker.

Edinson Cavani is a high quality solution to the attack, but only a short term one. His contract extension takes him until June 2022 and that’s it.

Whether Harry Kane or Erling Haaland, United should look for a long-term solution. Danny Ings would be a medium-term solution with a lower investment.

Despite Cavani’s brilliance, it would make sense for United to expand the club’s options this summer.

This has been an underinvestment for far too long. What Anthony Martial has to offer next season remains a mystery, but this campaign has shown that United cannot rely on him after a meager return of just seven goals.
