Manchester United considered a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, The Telegraph report.

Newcastle United are said to have failed in a £30 million move for the Brazilian, who is now set to sign a new contract to stay at Aston Villa.

Luiz’s future has been a topic of uncertainty at Aston Villa over the past few weeks with his current deal set to expire in 2023.

The Telegraph report: “Manchester United are among the clubs understood to have considered making a bid this summer.”

United considered bid for Douglas Luiz

Even with Luiz’s contract having one year left, Villa were not prepared to sell on the cheap, as their rejection of a £30 million Newcastle offer shows.

You can only imagine what they would have demanded if Manchester United entered the bidding. It wouldn’t have been surprising to see a massive £50 million price tag.

This has been a problem for Manchester United for years now, we all remember Sean Longstaff’s price being set at £50 million.

It’s very possible that factoring all of this in was part of United’s decision not to bid for the midfielder, although it’s also uncertain whether manager Erik ten Hag himself was keen.

Luiz signed for Villa in 2019 from Manchester City. He has since racked up more than 110 appearances for the club and become a senior international for Brazil. The 24-year-old’s new contract is set to be announced shortly.

Manchester United are instead closing in on a move for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, The Guardian report. It’s unclear if he will be the only midfield addition, but time is slowly ticking down until the September 1 transfer deadline.
