New Manchester United signing Lisandro Martinez says he is thankful for the warm welcome he received on his pre-season debut.

The Argentina international played well in the 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano, starting alongside Raphael Varane in central defence.

Martinez said he thought playing in a packed Old Trafford was ‘amazing’ as he bids to build up his fitness ahead of the season kick off.

The defender was picked out for praise by goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who said he enjoyed playing with the new signing.

Martinez thankful for warm welcome

Martinez is Manchester United’s most expensive signing of the summer so far, and it remains to be seen if this will stay the same by the end of the transfer window.

The centre-back sent out a message on Instagram expressing his excitement at making his first appearance in a United shirt.

Martinez appears to be settling in quickly at United, and earned praise from manager Erik ten Hag for his performance too.

Ten Hag told the club website: “I think it was a really good combination with Rapha [Varane] and they played really solid. That was good to see. Always the question is how do you integrate and I think he can integrate quite well into the team.”

A big week is ahead for Manchester United’s players as they try and get into Erik ten Hag’s starting line-up for the opening fixture against Brighton.

A lot of positions look settled for the opener, but centre-back is wide open. Martinez will be pleased to get his first start under his belt, and Varane playing 90 minutes was also a big step for him too.

Dan is still wondering what would have happened if United had kept Juan Veron…
