Manchester United loanee Teden Mengi has been highly praised by Birmingham City manager Lee Bowyer.

The 19-year-old started his fourth straight game since being loaned out to the Blues until the end of the season earlier this month.

The centre-back managed to pick up his first win for the Championship side as they beat Barnsley 2-1 in the basement at St Andrew’s.

No player from either side has won more tackles (3) than the United youngster, according to WhoScored.

In addition to 41 touches and six duels won, the United academy graduate made three tackles, two interceptions and four clearances and blocked a shot.

After starting four straight games, Mengi has already managed to surpass his previous senior-level team best, set by Wayne Rooney last season at Derby County when he started three straight games.

Bowyer’s side were bouncing back after their midweek hammering against runaway leaders Fulham.

Less than a month at Birmingham and Teden Mengi had already impressed Birmingham fans but now his boss Lee Bowyer has given him an enthusiastic review of his start at the club.

Bowyer was asked if the Blues would be interested in signing Wolves centre-back Dion Sanderson, who spent the first half of the season on loan at the club, in the January window.

However, the 45-year-old quickly discovered that Teden Mengi had already replaced the Wolves youngster.

Speaking of BirminghamLive, Bowyer said: “We replaced him with Teds and I think Teds is doing brilliantly.

“He didn’t make any mistakes today either. Did you see him sprint maybe 80 meters to come back from a set piece and catch her?”

BirminghamLive gave the youngster a 7.5 rating for his performance, stating: “Showed pace and strength to keep Barnsley in check when play was stopped. Caught under the ball once but his speed on recovery is top notch.”
