As things stand, Manchester United have no active transfer activities for defensive midfielders this summer.

A lot can change, but youngster James Garner is the obvious beneficiary of United who are investing recruitment efforts in other positions.

Garner, 20, knows he has a huge summer and preparation ahead of him and is doing whatever it takes to be ready.

Garner posted a picture on his Instagram feed of working hard at the gym to strengthen and improve his body.

This will be essential if he is to get by and assert himself in the Premier League.

Garner excelled in the championship on loan at Nottingham Forest last season.

This gave him a real test of a physical brand of first-team football and he knows what to do to improve.

From a technical point of view, Garner is already very promising and needs to develop physically to support his all-round play. That can give him an edge on his return to United last season.

He seems to be doing the job and that can pay off when United returns to pre-season in July.

Great preparation for the season

With high-profile stars making international appearances this month, Garner could get an extra chance to impress the United coaches and he seems determined to take advantage of it.

As it stands, Garner is in pole position to become United’s next star in defensive midfield and while he has many offensive qualities in his game, United has a chance for a player who can protect the defense.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is happy to give his young talent a chance, and Garner could benefit from the opening in midfield as much as Mason Greenwood 2019 in the front.
