So it’s Chelsea against Manchester City in the Champions League final. We might find a TV show on another channel that we can watch that evening.

For Manchester United fans, this is a final that we would rather not take place. To see one of the teams lift the trophy would be a kick in the teeth.

United beat City in the last game between the two teams and drew the other league game, while our games against Chelsea both ended 0-0. They weren’t a better team, a team that won the Champions League caliber.

And yet you look around Europe this season and ask who is that?

Chelsea did well to knock out both Atletico and Real Madrid. This is where the goodwill ends.

Their group consisted of Rennes, Krasnodar and Seville. They were barely tested and their other knockout game was against Porto.

City met Porto, Olympiakos and Marseille in their group. To be fair, since then they have had tough ties against Dortmund and PSG and have come through them.

But this is not about them. Or Chelsea. It’s United and a huge opportunity has been missed.

It could have been United …

It’s great that United are close to reaching the Europa League final and maybe winning the Cup is just what this team needs to have more confidence and a real blast in the Champions League next season. Our hoodoo semi-final seems to be over.

However, it cannot be overlooked that the 2020/21 Champions League was a wide open competition that United blew up.

A tough draw in the group stage didn’t help us, and yet we were in an outstanding position with the opening wins against PSG and RB Leipzig.

Then a catastrophe occurred. The 2-1 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir is still obvious, especially when you consider that they are 15th in the Turkish Super League.

The way you lost with that ridiculous goal is even more annoying.

The group stage exit was a combination of bad luck in an unforgiving group and a situation in which it was United’s own fault and lost such a winnable game.

Chelsea have shown that if you’re in the knockout round lottery, you might just win. United couldn’t buy a ticket.

Perhaps United would have moved in against Bayern Munich in the last 16 and lost. This is our luck to get tough draws.

But our record in the Europa League this season shows that it is really difficult for this United team to strike two legs and you would imagine our chances of being competitive against any team.

Victories over PSG and Leipzig showed that we were just as good as both teams. We left us in the lurch in the away game in Turkey with a confusing team selection and a poor performance.

If United had made it to the knockout stage, who knows. We could be in the Champions League final now.

The Europa League final is a decent consolation, but winning the trophy would be mitigated by another English team winning the Champions League. It could have been us instead.
