Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has called for unity after the club’s final loss in the Europa League.

United lost on penalties to Villarreal after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Maguire said Manchester United expect better results as a club and the players know this and will work to correct it.

Maguire missed the final with an ankle injury two weeks before the game.

The club captain was named on the bench but was an unused substitute with Bruno Fernandes skipping the page.

Maguire had the painful job of leading an injured United team upstairs to collect their runner-up medals that some players could barely see.

This was a death knell at the end of a long, tough season for United as the club hoped this would be their reward.

Maguire is not going to look back at the night fondly and instead wonder if there was anything he could have done differently had he been on the court.

United conceded a bad goal from a set piece and it is fair to wonder if he could have contributed in an offensive sense, either from a set piece or through his ability to carry the ball up.

Captain qualities needed

United players and management will now turn to Harry Maguire to help restore the confidence of the deflated players.

Maguire plays a key role in uniting the team, moving them forward and getting them to work harder than ever to be successful next season.

He has an international duty with England at the Euros to take care of himself when he’s fit and he’s just an integral player for the Three Lions as for United.

Next season, United will bring the lessons of this campaign to the Champions League and leave that disappointment behind. It’s Maguire’s job to make sure that last night’s failure motivates, but doesn’t last.
