According to highly regarded Barcelona source Gerard Romero, Manchester United are close to signing Frenkie de Jong.
Romero told his Twitch channel that Barcelona are driven by a desire to sell De Jong to raise cash, regarding him as their most saleable asset.
Romero said: “Before the end of the league and with a 95% probability, Frenkie De Jong will be transferred to Manchester United. It is a pure economic issue. Barça needs to sell a player who has not been top at the club
“The operation would be closed for between 70 and 80 euros. We are on May 11 and the situation can still change. At the club they are clear that if he continues for one more season and the player does not explode, he will lose value and Barça will lose money.”

Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United would be a real shock
Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United would be a real shock, with Barcelona investing £65 million to sign him three years ago.
For them, getting the chance to get their money back is a good financial opportunity considering they have a replacement lined up in Carlos Soler, but it is a big risk on their part.
As for De Jong, despite the chance to link up with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, the prospect of departing Barcelona really hasn’t been on his radar.
De Jong, 24, featured in Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Celta Vigo in their last game and looked the picture of contentment in a message he sent out on social media.
This ties in with comments he made to The Guardian in February, in which he pledged his future to Barcelona.
De Jong explained: “I’m very happy I’m at Barcelona: from a young age I’ve wanted to be here, so in that way it has been a dream come true. But I would have liked to win more trophies than we did in my first two years. I expected more in that sense, let’s put it that way. But other than that, I’m very happy here and hopefully for many more years.”
Is he happy to move to United?
Manchester United fans don’t want a player at the club who comes begrudgingly, no matter how talented he is. We have seen this before and it doesn’t work out.
So De Jong will have to be ‘all in’, if he decides to leave, and with Barcelona seemingly pushing him through the exit door, he will have to quickly adjust.
Reuniting with Erik ten Hag is probably the only way to really make him happy, and the departing Ajax boss will make him feel at home at Manchester United, as will former teammate Donny van de Beek.
United won’t have Champions League football to offer too, and may have to convince him that 2022/23 will just be a one year blip. Here’s hoping.
