Manchester United are pushing to sign French midfielder Adrien Rabiot in a move which has generated a lukewarm response from supporters.

The Times reports a £19 million fee has been agreed with Juventus which is £15 million plus £4 million in add-ons.

Rabiot was not the game-changing midfielder United fans had in mind to help turn the team around, even though he should be a moderate improvement.

French football expert Julien Laurens spoke to BBC 5 Live [11/8] to discuss why Rabiot had not fared so well at Juventus and what could be in store for him at Old Trafford.

Rabiot ‘could be good’ for United

Laurens said: “I can understand the negativity around why United should sign him. I don’t think it’s easy at Juventus when there’s three different managers, two in the last two [years] where there’s not a clear identity, sometimes you even play on the left of a midfield four flat where I don’t think this is easy.

“I still think that Rabiot has underachieved at Juventus, I just don’t think that the environment there was helping him to shine and to thrive.

“I think there’s talent there, he’s 27, I think that in a structure with a manager like Ten Hag, he could be good for United, and also he’s better than Fred and McTominay.”

Rabiot is likely to benefit from a change of scenery, and like many players, has a point to prove to secure his World Cup spot.

Knowing Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo from France and Juventus will help him out too, if the deal goes through.

United have to agree personal terms with the player, which has not yet been done. The Telegraph reported football director John Murtough has flown out to hold talks with Rabiot’s agent and mother Veronique Rabiot.
