A former Raphael Varane coach says the French defender is a “great addition” for Manchester United.

Aitor Karanka was part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Real Madrid and helped make Varane the player he is today.

The Spanish coach is confident that Varane will be as successful in the Premier League as he was in La Liga.

Karanka told Sky Sports: “There’s no question he’s a great addition. He has everything you need to be successful at Manchester United.

“It’s a new challenge for him and he’s at the ideal age. Even after he has won everything he has and knows him as much as I do, he will be very motivated to keep winning trophies and moving forward. “

A new job

Karanka saw firsthand how hard Varane worked as a teenager to adapt to a new league in Spain. He has no doubt the Frenchman will have the same focus in his new role at Manchester United.

Varane’s contract is set to be formalized next week ahead of the new Premier League season.

His signing was praised by former Red Devils star Gary Neville and is considered a major upgrade to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defense.

United already added Jadon Sancho in attack and were able to win both players as Varane cut costs as his contract with Real Madrid is only one year left.

After 10 years in Spain, Varane wanted a new challenge after coach Zinedine Zidane and his long-time playing partner Sergio Ramos said goodbye. Varane is sure to get what he wants at Old Trafford and he is joining a team ready to take the next step forward.
