Cavani has scored eight goals and provided three assists in his last seven games for Manchester United.
Four of those goals came in the Europa League semi-finals, in which he became the first United player since Tommy Taylor in 1957 to score in both legs of a European semi-final.
A formal announcement from United is expected in due course.

Cavani signed a free transfer for United last October after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.
The Uruguayan has scored 15 goals this season and has gotten better over the course of the season.
He has no previous experience playing in front of fans at Old Trafford and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged him to keep going to feel the fans’ love and passion for the next season.
Cavani’s season could end with cutlery and United are now in the Europa League final.
He has become an important part of the squad as a leader and sets an example for this talented young group of players.
The news that he’s staying for at least another year is a fantastic development and hopefully prepares United for another successful campaign next year.
Post Cristiano Ronaldo # 7s at Manchester United
- Michael Owen (2009-2012)
A promising start for Owen quickly faded. The former Liverpool striker struggled with injuries and only scored five Premier League goals.
- Antonio Valencia (2012-2013)
Valencia have been a consistent player for United and the hope was that the number 7 could take their game to another level. Instead, he went backwards and asked to return to number 25.
- Angel di Maria (2014-2015)
United had high hopes for Di Maria after paying £ 63m for him. His form improved after a promising start and he just gave up and forced a move to PSG.
- Memphis Depay (2015-2017)
The number seven shirt was too early for Memphis Depay, which was all hype and little substance. The Dutchman scored just two goals in the Premier League and was sold to Lyon.
- Alexis Sanchez (2018-2020)
United tried to resolve dilemma number seven by handing the shirt over to a seasoned Premier League player. Unfortunately, Sanchez’s level of performance has collapsed. He only scored three league goals.
- Edinson Cavani (2020 – now)
United may finally have found a worthy successor for Ronaldo. He has already scored more league goals than Sanchez and Depay.
