Edinson Cavani’s contract extension at Manchester United has been confirmed by the club.

Uruguay’s new deal runs until June 2022 and that ends a period of uncertainty for the striker.

Speaking to United’s website to explain his decision, Cavani said he had a bond with the club that he is reluctant to break off so quickly.

Cavani said: “Over the course of the season I’ve developed a great deal of affection for the club and everything it represents. I feel a deep bond with my teammates and the people who work behind the scenes here. They motivate me every day and I know that we can achieve special things together.

“From the first moment I arrived, I felt the manager’s trust. As a player, that belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.

“I was touched by how much the fans wanted me to stay and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy in my performances on the field. I haven’t had the chance to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and I can’t wait for that. “

Ole impressed

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is delighted with the deal and praises the combination of Cavani’s consistent quality and professionalism, which sets a good example for his teammates.

Solskjaer said, “When Edinson signed I said he would bring energy, power and leadership to this group and I was not wrong. He was everything I imagined and more.

“As a coach, we knew about his goal record. However, it is his personality that has brought so much to this squad, he has a winning mentality and a clear attitude towards everything he does.

“Edinson is one of the last to leave the training ground and with his daily approach to his job sets the tone for the aspiring youngsters. I always wanted him to stay and see how our fans react to him as a player and that means hopefully he will get this opportunity. “

Cavani has scored 15 goals this season, eight of which have been scored in his last seven games. With that, United has reached the Europa League final.

As a 34-year-old, Cavani looks as deadly as ever and it is a pleasure to see him play for the club. Getting at least another year out of him is a wise decision, especially when he’s been through a full preseason.

He has been linked with a return to South America, and while his start at United has been marked by injuries and unfair suspension, Cavani is now shooting at all cylinders and looking as deadly as ever.
