Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho experience the lows of international heartbreak. Both players missed penalty shoot-outs when England lost the 2020 European Championship final on home turf.

Rashford (23) and Sancho (21) are still young enough to recover. All you have to do is reach out to former United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo stood in tears in 2004 after his Portuguese team lost the final to surprise winner Greece.

Portugal hosted the tournament and was a big favorite to win the final. But they failed to get the job done and Ronaldo missed opportunities along the way.

After the tears dried, Ronaldo said after the tournament that he would not define himself by his country’s failure.

Quoted by Goal, he said: “I have to keep going. I have to look ahead. Throughout my career there will be many other opportunities in Europe to win and make up for this huge disappointment. “

Ronaldo has kept his promise. 12 years later at Euro 2016, he was part of a Portuguese team that shocked France on their home turf to win the country’s first major tournament cup.

He has also achieved unprecedented success as a lone fighter. Ronaldo is the all-time all-time joint international goalscorer, which will soon be clear, and has won an incredible five Ballon d’Or trophies and five Champions League trophies.

The shocked duo of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford only need to look at Ronaldo’s resilience to recover, to guide their own reactions to this heartbreaking setback.

Winning just one Ballon d’Or would be incredible for both players, let alone five, but no one will be able to follow what Ronaldo did. Nonetheless, its overwhelming success since 2004 shows what is possible.

Failure can be a step on the way to greater success. Rashford and Sancho are both incredible talents with strong personalities willing to break down barriers in order to be successful.

Ronaldo achieved great things at Manchester United shortly after his heartbreak at Euro 2004 and won the League Cup in 2006 before winning three straight league titles from 2007 to 2009 and a Champions League in 2008.

Sancho and Rashford have a bright future ahead of them and if they believe in themselves and keep pushing they can potentially achieve great success at Old Trafford as well as for England.
