The Levenshulme Market is hosting three special festive markets this December in the run-up to Christmas.
As Manchester prepares for the festive season, Levenshulme Market hosts a series of Christmas markets that showcase our highly independent spirit. These will be markets designed to support small independent businesses who, after a difficult year, may not be able to afford the cost of trading in the larger corporate Christmas markets but still deserve habits.
Supporting small local businesses this Christmas makes the local economy strong, and Levenshulme Market is Manchester’s only social business market run by local volunteers that brings its profits back to its neighborhood.
Christmas market mix tapes
Since it was not possible to bring live music to the market last year, we asked Andy Burham to provide us with a mixtape that customers could listen to in the market or at home. It comprised fine indie cuts and classic Christmas cheeses, which we also used to encourage people to donate to the mayor’s homeless aid. It was such a big hit that we not only repeat it this year, but were selected by a trio of prominent Mancunians with three playlists – one for each of our Christmas markets.
The first of them is Dave Haslam. Haslam DJed over 450 times at the iconic Manchester Hacienda in the late 1980s and has since DJed worldwide. He has also written a number of books, including “Art Decades,” a series of mini-books on art and culture. Signed copies of these books will be available in the market on Saturday 4th December.
We will announce the parties involved in the following two mixtapes in advance of the respective market.
Our popular project Three Minute Portraits returns for Christmas. In December 2019 we brought together a number of local artists and asked them to draw quick portraits of our clients for £ 3 a picture. We’ll be gathering some great local artists again – including Laurie Pink and Lisa Payne (House of Payne) to sketch market customers, children and pets.
Handmade gifts from local independent companies
Each festive special offers almost 50 stands with handmade, unique Christmas gifts as well as the finest street food. Customers can also find handcrafted jewelry, knitwear, Christmas wreaths, ceramics, locally made candles, soaps and skin care products, spirits in small quantities, an incredible selection of artwork and cards, and much more – all produced by small independent businesses from across the region.
Made in Levy
Among these items, customers can also purchase some special Made in Levy items. We worked with some of our local Levenshulme dealers to create a mini range of festive merchandise: a Last Ember winter scented candle, a Christmas hot sauce from DevilDog Sauces, an ice cream from Ginger’s Comfort Emporium made with ingredients sourced locally Allocation. All of this is made by residents and businesses in Levenshulme and is only available at the Levenshulme market.
Entertainment and games
We have a number of Christmas entertainments scheduled for December, including a live performance of a different choir at each of our Christmas markets, including the Levenshulme Community Choir and the Manchester University Opera Society. We are sponsored by Around the Box, a local organization that offers free games, puzzles and challenges for all ages, and the Science Buskers, also known as the University of Manchester Physics Outreach Society, who will be on hand to experience the magic of physics Tricks, illusions and other family fun.
to eat and drink
No Christmas market would be complete without food and drink. Customers can look forward to some of the best street food in Manchester, including Nepalese momos from The Little Yeti, sourdough pizzas from Rise, vegan West African dishes from Gwafuvegan, and more. At our last market of the year there will even be a heart of the German sausage swing.
The Levenshulme Market Bar will also be with us every week and will serve beers, ales, wines and cocktails, as well as mulled wine and cider in December.
Customers can also take something home for Christmas with cheese, eggs and butter from the ever-popular Winter Tarn Dairy, wine on tap directly from small Italian vineyards from Vinobuono, sauce and spices from the local legend DevilDog sauces and pies, sausage rolls and pies from HMPasties, which provide employment to convicts, reward and stake in their community, while creating award-winning pies that are ideal winter warmers.
