When Bruno Fernandes scored the Manchester United penalty against Aston Villa, the outcome was never in doubt.

Fernandes sent Emiliano Martinez the wrong way to score his third penalty against Villa in three consecutive games.

The equalizing free kick brought United back into play and United secured a 3-1 win.

Fernandes’ record from the penalty spot is almost flawless. Only one miss against Newcastle affects his otherwise perfect record.

On course for all records

Bruno Fernandes isn’t quite United’s leading penalty goalscorer. But he’ll be that fast soon.

Fernandes has scored 21 penalties for United, more than Eric Cantona (18), Cristiano Ronaldo (16) and Denis Irwin (12).

Fernandes is currently United’s third goalscorer.

Wayne Rooney has 27 and Ruud van Nistelrooy scored 28 free kicks.

The difference is that it took Rooney 559 games to record that number and Van Nistelrooy made 219 appearances.

Fernandes has scored 21 penalties in just 76 club games.

Fernandes will break the record next season, possibly even before the end of 2021.

As Sergio Aguero hilariously showed everyone over the weekend, scoring penalties is not that easy.

It takes both mental strength and technique to constantly outsmart goalkeepers who have spent time researching the taker.

Fernandes has scored a total of 39 goals for United, just two fewer than compatriot Nani, who enjoyed success in his many years at Old Trafford.
