Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer has provided a fitness update on Manchester United loanees Teden Mengi and Tahith Chong.

After overcoming the hamstring injury which saw him come off in the defeat to Bournemouth, Mengi played the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 win against Luton Town.

Although he came through the clash against Luton unscathed, Mengi has been unable to train since that clash.

Bowyer said: “After the game last weekend, he finished the game fine, we thought he was okay, then the next time we were in he reported it just felt a bit funny.

“He felt it was maybe from the bruising. He has had a scan and tweaked it a little bit and we just have to see how he goes day by day.

“But he finished the game, I don’t understand it. That’s why we had to adjust again.

“He hasn’t trained, the first day back in that’s when he said he feels a bit of pain so we sent him for a scan, couldn’t take any chances and it’s come back with a strain.

“I don’t know an estimate, it’s day by day, it shouldn’t be too long.”

BirminghamLive thinks that Mengi could return against either Reading or Huddersfield over the next week.

Although he didn’t feature in the 2-2 draw against Stoke City, Bowyer provided a positive update on Chong’s progress at Wast Hills Training Ground.

Bowyer explained: “Tahith Chong is good, he has been training out there with the lads.

“He has another week of training to get through before we can think about giving him minutes to build up his match fitness, but it’s nice to see him out there with us.”

BirminghamLive believe there is a chance that the Dutchman, who hasn’t played since October, could feature for Birmingham’s under-23s against Southampton tonight.

If Chong did make his return this evening it would likely rule out any involvement in tomorrow night’s Championship clash at Reading.

But gaining vital minutes at under-23 level could see him form part of the matchday squad for Saturday’s clash against Huddersfield Town.
