Facundo Pellistri’s star tournament in Manchester United’s first pre-season friendly match showed how well the club has managed to secure a key position.

The role of the right wing is no longer a desperate weak point. United is overflowing with options.

While the center-back was the position Jose Mourinho was keen to fix during his time at the club, he never quite got to grips with the wing position either and tried to bring Ivan Perisic to the club.

The 2019 season began with Andreas Pereira on United’s right wing, an unfortunate experiment that underscored the lack of options.

Since then, United have gotten on with Mason Greenwood in the role, but rarely felt like this was his long-term position better suited to a central role.

Triple Move solves the problem

Failure to sign Jadon Sancho in 2020 led United to consider longer-term alternatives.

A double change of Amad and Facundo Pellitri did not solve anything for the 2020/21 season, but should pay off in the coming years.

And this summer United also closed a deal for Jadon Sancho, paying £ 73m for the Dortmund winger.

If anything, United’s options are now overflowing. Pellitri starred in the pre-season friendly but United can’t really give him the playing time he needs. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told the club website that he is likely to be loaned out.

This will benefit Pellitri so that he can play regularly and help him return to United as a stronger player.

By this point, Mason Greenwood may have developed into a central striker who shares time with Edinson Cavani this season, removing some competition from the right.

Sancho’s ability to play on the left as well will allow Amad and Pellitri to battle for a spot on the right when both are ready.

Although not everything was fully planned, with Amad and Pellitri both risking if a move doesn’t work out for Sancho in the long term, United are now in a stronger position than they have been since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Sancho can step in immediately and make a difference, while Amad and Pellitri may not flourish for a few years. Exciting times are ahead.
